Helen L. Jacobs “Mother” was born on March 11, 1930 in Galion, Louisiana to Emma Lee Johnson and Samuel Price. She departed this life on Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at the age of 88.
Helen left Louisiana in the 1950’s to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse. She eventually arrived In Portland, Oregon where she received her nursing degree. She later moved to Seattle, Washington and accepted a nursing position with Group Health Hospital, which is where she met her husband Peter Jacobs. Helen and Peter were married for 37 years, until his death in November, 2010.
In her position at Group Health, Helen worked in the Emergency Unit. During her service there, she became a familiar and comforting face for community members, many of whom were in crisis. She retired from Group Health in 1994 after many years of service,
Helen accepted Christ at an early age and, at the time of her death was a dedicated and faithful member of True Vine of Holiness Missionary Baptist Church. In addition to serving on the “Mothers Board,” she also sang in the gospel choir. Throughout her life, Helen received numerous honors for her church and community service. She has served as a primary caregiver and mentor for many children within her family.
Helen was preceded in death by husband Peter Jacobs, nephews Brian McKinly and Nikki Burris. She is survived by brothers Marvin McKinly (Linda), Seattle, WA, John Price (Narvel), Hayward CA, sister, Retha Bilbrew, Portland, OR, niece Teresa Maxwell (Walter), nephews LaRon Burris and Darnell McKinly and a host of great nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Helen was truly a gift from God. Her compassion, nurturing, fighting spirit, quick wit as well as her heartfelt honesty, will be missed by all that knew her.
