Deaconess Barbara Jean Mitchell
Barbara Jean Mitchell was born in Washington, DC, on March 24, 1951, to Willie T. and Mattie Mae Ramey. Barbara was raised by God fearing parents. She received a Christian education and was baptized at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in her early teens. She attended Cardoza Senior High School in Washington, DC. During her teen years she was a Candy Stripe Nurse at Freedmen’s Hospital where she served with kindness and devotion. Upon completing high school, she joined the U.S. Marine Corps.
After completing her military career, she moved to Seattle, Washington, where she met and married her partner in life, Stanford Mitchell, Sr. They built a life together and had two beautiful children, Stanford, Jr., and Latarsha. She passionately loved, protected, provided, and cared for them. She and her husband were members of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church where she was a faithful member of Deaconess board; she sang in the inspirational choir, Mass choir and served on the Senior usher board. She lived a life of grace, service, and gratitude. Barbara furthered her education and subsequently received her nursing degree. She practiced her nursing craft until her death.
On October 18, 2023, Barbara transitioned this life – from earth to Glory. She was preceded in death by loving parents Willie and Mattie Ramey; her sister Lynn Ramey-Howe; brother William N. Ramey and great grandson Tyzheaun Garrett.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 51 years Stanford Mitchell, Sr.; son Stanford Mitchell, Jr.; daughter Latarsha Mitchell (Rushell Crain); sister Roxane R. Tishkevich; brothers Rev. Willie T. Ramey, III, (Bettie J.) and Rev. Cornellis K. Ramey; aunt Lizzie Fields Mimms; grandchildren Lashaye Crain, Shanelle Crain, Raeshelle Crain, Shavayla Crain, Stanford Mitchell III, Dabreon Mitchell, Deaujanique Mitchell, Deaujanae Mitchell and Tanjanique Givens; 8 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends
Barbara always greeted you with a smile and loving heart. Barbara enjoyed spending time outdoors at Othello & Barnett parks with her grandchildren. She had many hobbies and found joy in just being with family and friends. Barbara will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love and dedication will forever be cherished.
