Melvin Lozan, Jr. was born to Priscilla Felix and Melvin Lozan, Sr. in New Orleans, Louisiana on April 5, 1948. He was the first of 5 children. Melvin was a child who showed strong passion. During his teenage years, he moved to St. Louis where he lived with his aunt Mayetta Henderson. He attended and earned his degree from St. Louis University. Melvin was active duty in the Navy. The Navy lead him to Seattle, Washington, the city and state that he would eventually call home.
In the beginning of his working career, Melvin aspired a career that would align with his personality. Melvin spent time working as a fireman for the fire department. He worked for Sound Oil company (formerly known as Rossoe Energy). He eventually changed directions to become a mental health drug and alcohol counselor for Therapeutic Health Services (THS). He was strong willed and strong spirited and believed in advocating for others. THS was the avenue for Melvin to express himself and he would continue employment with THS until his retirement. Melvin owned a successful Janitorial Business and held city contracts for over 20 years. His business has earned awards for growth and customer service.
Melvin was a Mason with the Masonic Harmony for 50 years. He held many positions and was a pioneer in helping the youth members in the Order of Knights of Pythagoras. He was a Right Worshipful Supreme Master Knight
Melvin liked sports (basketball, baseball, football). In his younger years prior to college, he played on the baseball team. He was an accomplished swimmer and roller skater. Melvin also coached basketball for his children at St. Joseph and his grandchildren at St. Therese taking teams to win championships.
Melvin loved and spent his time with his family. He met his loving wife Helen (Peggy) in Seattle, Washington. He was a role model and tried to instill the value of hard work and dedication into his children and grandchildren. Melvin spent time talking to his grandchildren about the value of making good choices in life. He would help to educate them on history and politics. He was always there for his family. He was his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren’s biggest supporter. You would look up and see dad or granddad.
Melvin was the master of his kitchen. He was known as “Chef Lozan”. He loved cooking for his family and enjoyed looking at the cooking shows to find new dishes. When he was not cooking, he was teaching his grandchildren how to make some of his favorite meals.
Melvin had a great relationship with his sister (Pam). Although his sister was in a different state (Virginia); the distance between them did not affect their relationship. He talked to his sister every day and was very much involved in her life.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Helen (Peggy) Lozan and his remaining sibling, Pamela (Pam) M. Lozan (spouse Alonso) Bell. He is the beloved father to Laron, Darryl (spouse Kimiko), Michele, Priscilla, Sheila, Melvin III; grandfather to JaeVon, TreVier, JaCori, June, Naaji, Te’A, Raven, Rashaad, Keishianna, Kaison; great grandfather to Dupriest, Ra’miyah, Christopher, Cerenti, Amari, L J, TreOnna, Azraella, Ja’zirah, Kyler, Jayceon and Jayviar ; and the uncle to many nieces and nephews. He also leaves many other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, aunt, brothers: James, Randy, Joseph, and son: Raymond.
