Obituary

Dorothy Washington was born on March 17, 1931, in Omaha, Nebraska to the union of Julius Washington and Grace O’Neal Washington. She was the second oldest of five children.

After spending her early years in Omaha, she moved to Seattle in the 1950s. In Seattle she met the love of her life William “Bill” Brown. They married in 1954 and produced five children.

Dorothy was a hard worker. She held various jobs until she discovered her passion for education. She was a natural educator. She worked for Seattle Public Schools for 30 years, cultivating a career as a Teacher’s Assistant. She treasured teaching students, fostering their growth and learning.

Dorothy was affectionally called GrandDot by her grandchildren, will forever be missed by her family and friends. Family was the foundation of all she did, Dorothy brought her family to their first O’Neal Slater Family Reunion in 1986, creating new relationships with extended family relatives in various states that continued until her passing.

Dorothy’s warm smile and welcome demeanor brightened everyone’s day. She often wore hats and enjoyed good food, often asking for “just a little bit” only to want a second portion. Her financial philosophy of saving money and living a frugal life, proved exemplary as she purchased several homes and established bank accounts for all her grandchildren

Dorothy had many interests and hobbies including hosting family dinners, working on puzzles, watching Wheel of Fortune, catching up with family and friends on the phone, and playing cards games. She especially loved teaching her grand and great grandchildren how to read and play games.

She was a devoted Jehovah Witness most of her life, attending the King Hall until her health prevented her from walking. During her last year of life, she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior.

Dorothy lived a good life transiting to perfect peace on Saturday, January 30, 2022 after several years of declining health. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, daughter Belinda, granddaughter Leah, sister Frances, brothers Charles and Raymond.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children Michael, Rodney, Cianthe, James, and Attiyya and Nyerere Yafeu, who she raised as her own; 17 beloved grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sister Joyce Hardy of Smithfield, Virginia; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends she has made throughout her life’s journey. Dorothy was blessed and will truly be missed.
