Elroy Chavis Obituary

Elroy Chavis, known as “Nanny” by all his loved ones was called home by his Heavenly Father on May 3rd, 2024. Elroy was born on September 29th 1945 to the union of the late Joseph Chavis and Odelia Beverly Chavis in Anahuac, Texas. The family later moved to China, Texas where he was baptized early in his childhood.

Elroy attended J.H Henderson high school where he was voted “Most Handsome Boy” and “Best Dressed”. Elroy enjoyed playing basketball, football and was member of the schools band.

In 1967 Elroy married the love of his life Mary Louise Chavis of 49 years and took on the role of being a father to her son Melvin James Breaux whom he loved as if he was his own, and to their union two daughters were born Carol Denise Chavis and Bessie Lynette Chavis, the family relocated to Seattle Washington, where Elroy a hardworking man proudly worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad Company until his retirement in 1999.

Elroy’s hobbies were playing pool, throwing darts and he especially loved dancing.

He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Odelia Chavis, loving wife Mary Chavis, son Melvin Breaux; Sister: Josephine Scott and Jennie Mae Chavis Brothers: John Chavis, Joseph Chavis, Saul Chavis, Lee Chavis, Peter Chavis and Walter Chavis.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory

Daughters: Carol Chavis-Martin of Puyallup Washington and Bessie Chavis of Phoenix Arizona; Sisters: Geneva Roberts of Beaumont Texas, Mary Ann Chavis of Beaumont Texas, Anneva Edwards of China Texas; Brother: Paul Chavis of Beaumont Texas and his many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
