Ethelmarie Hubbard Obituary

Ethelmarie Dorothy Hubbard was born on Tuesday, February 8, 1955, in Seattle to the union of Martha O. Gilliam and James A. Hubbard Sr., and peacefully departed this world on Nov 23rd, 2024 at 69 years of age. An adoring mother to Swanszette Martha Hubbard and Ya’vonne Darcell Hubbard. She was also a proud grandmother to: Swanszette Maria, Maya Lou, Uma Lorraine, and Nyomi May Garcia, her four cherished granddaughters, who brought her endless happiness. Ethelmarie is survived by her two brothers, James A. Hubbard Jr. and Jason Turner, as well as her two sisters, Darcell L. Hayes and Jennifer Turner. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews; Devon Howard, Raylynn Watson, Jason Turner, Bryan K. Hayes Jr., Jason J.E. Turner and Josiah I.J. Turner. As well as a host of cousins and extended family members, including her Grand-dogs, whom each held a special place in her heart. She was preceded in death by her father, and sister, Linda Robinson.

Ethelmarie was a lifelong resident of Seattle. She grew up in a family that instilled in her a love of history, the arts, and the importance of community. As an artist and skilled seamstress, Ethelmarie was known for her intricate, beautiful work, which she shared generously with family and friends. Her creativity was boundless, and her artistic contributions continue to be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to experience them.

Ethel graduated from Franklin High School, where she began writing poetry in her junior year. She also developed a love for sewing and design. She created beautiful clothing for her daughters and even designed costumes for local theater and performance groups. Ethel’s talent extended to doll clothes, which she crafted with love and care. She also held sewing workshops at Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute. She was known for her meticulous attention to detail—whether restoring historical dolls or making costumes for the N.W. premier Rap group Emerald Street Boyz. Ethelmaire also assisted her sister Darcell with the Seattle All-City Summer Musical as an assistant costumer, dresser, driver, counselor, and all around go-to person.

Ethel spent many years working with the Black Heritage Society of Washington State (BHS) and the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI), where her efforts were highly valued. Her contributions included curating exhibits, one of which highlighted the Black Federal Theater, where her grandfather, Perry Gilliam, and great aunt, Alice Tanner, performed as Actors.

Ethelmarie was deeply passionate about genealogy, particularly the history of Black Seattleites. She devoted countless hours to genealogical research, striving to preserve the stories of families in the region and to uncover the rich history of her own ancestors. Her work was a testament to her love for her heritage and her commitment to sharing it with future generations. She dedicated much of her life to researching her family's history, and also shared her research talent and expertise by helping friends and others trace their family roots, giving them the gift of self and family discovery. Ethel was mentored by Jackie Lawson, a talented genealogist who founded the Black Heritage Society (BHS). Under Jackie’s guidance, Ethel honed her skills, and in turn passed on a wealth of knowledge to her nephew Bryan, who will carry on her genealogical research projects.

Ethel will be remembered by her many family members, friends, and the countless individuals she touched throughout her life. Her legacy of love, and creativity will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Her vibrant spirit, creative talent, and passionate dedication to preserving history have left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Her family and friends will forever remember her as a strong, caring, and talented woman who brought people together with her warmth and generosity. Her commitment to family will continue to inspire and be cherished by those who loved her. Ethel has now gone on to join the ancestors, where her spirit will continue to guide and watch over those she left behind. We love you, Ethel.
