Janice Stephens - Hampton Obituary

Janice Marie Stephens-Hampton was born on May 2, 1956, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Robert Stephens, Sr. and Gertrude Taylor-Stephens. In October 1957, she relocated to Seattle with her parents and five siblings. Janice attended Horace-Mann Elementary, Meany Junior High School, and graduated from Garfield High School. She was employed as a secretary with the City of Seattle and King County until she experienced two cerebral hemorrhages. According to her medical team, thankfully, these events did not prove fatal, and she continued to live for an additional 48 years.

Janice was independent and preferred to do things on her own schedule. She was academically gifted and often came up with creative ways to avoid helping her siblings with chores on Saturday mornings. Life with her was unpredictable day to day, and her genuine sense of humor made her easy to love. Everyone appreciated her authenticity.

In the 80’s, Janice married Robert Earl Hampton Sr. Together, they had one child, a son, Robert Earl Hampton Jr.  Robert Earl Jr. and Ayana Nevers blessed Janice with four grandsons.

Her niece and assistant caregiver, Sabrina, states: “She was funny and quirky in her special way. She would always say to me, if it wasn’t for you, I don’t know what I would have done. She would always say, “You are a blessing, and if you don’t get your rewards now, you will definitely get them later. She sometimes calls me Sabrina and then say, “I mean Mrs. Bland” with a laugh.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Earl Hampton Sr., grandson Romeo Hampton, father, Robert Stephens Sr, and mother, Gertrude Taylor-Stephens. Also, her brothers, Jerry Donald Stephens, John Allen Stephens, Phillip Fredrick Stephens; her sisters, Annie Sue Stephens-Anderson, Deborah Carl Stephens, and nephew, Dontell Alfred Red-Stephens.

Left behind to cherish her memory are Brother Robert Stephens Jr., Sister Cherry Kay Stephens of Seattle, and Son Robert Earl Hampton. Grandsons, Ramiro Hampton, Reon Hampton, and Rayquan Hampton. Great-grandbabies, twins Nalani Hampton and Nasai Hampton, of Seattle, Washington. Brother-in-law Morris Anderson Sr. of Shaw, Mississippi. Nephews: Morris Anderson II, Demond Lamar Stephens of Seattle. Nieces: Sabrina Bland of Atlanta, Georgia, Wonphilina Stephens, Philina Flight-Stephens of Seattle, and Consuelo Luna-Stephens of Yakima, Washington; as well as a host of cousins and other relatives.
