Pastor Robert Bates Obituary

Pastor Robert Franklin Bates, a devoted servant of God, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and pillar of the community, passed away peacefully at his home in Seattle, Washington, on August 7, 2025. He was surrounded by the love of his cherished wife, Sister Bates, and his daughter, Britni Bates.

Born on November 4, 1935, in Richmond, Kentucky, to James and Priscilla Bates, Pastor Bates was raised with strong values of faith, family, and service. He was preceded in death by his loving parents and his dear grandson, Donte Red.

After relocating to Seattle in the late 1950s, Pastor Bates became an active and faithful member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, where he served with joy and devotion under the leadership of Dr. C. E. Williams. As the director of the mass choir, he shared his passion for worship and music, touching the hearts of many through song.

On June 17, 1984, Pastor Bates answered God’s call to ministry and was ordained as a preacher. Just one year later, he was called to serve as pastor of Good Shepherd Non-Denominational Church in South Seattle. For decades, he led with compassion, wisdom, and unwavering faith, guiding his congregation with grace and humility.

In addition to his spiritual leadership, Pastor Bates dedicated over 40 years of his professional life to public service. He held positions with the City of Seattle, the Port of Seattle, and the Seattle Public School District, where his integrity and dedication left a lasting impact. He retired in the late 1990s, having earned the deep respect and admiration of colleagues, students, and community members alike.

On February 25, 1995, Pastor Bates was united in marriage to his beloved wife, Sister Barbara Bates, in a beautiful ceremony at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, officiated by Reverend Dr. Samuel Berry McKinney. Their union was one of deep love and shared purpose.

A lifelong scholar of the Word, Pastor Bates earned his Bachelor of Theology degree from United Theological Seminary and Bible College on May 22, 1999. He later served as a Theology instructor under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Houston, continuing his legacy of teaching and inspiring others.

Pastor Bates also had a passion for health and fitness. A dedicated athlete, he fought in the Golden Gloves and competed in body building, earning numerous awards for his discipline and excellence. His commitment to physical wellness reflected the same dedication he brought to every area of his life.

He was an avid reader, a thoughtful writer, and a man of profound wisdom and gentle strength. His life was a testimony to faith, perseverance, and love.

Pastor Bates is lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his wife, Sister Bates; his children Carol Bates, Janet Bates-Stewart, Britni Bates, and Michael “Tony” (Angela) Moore and Keith (Cristina) Gayden; grandchildren Dana Bates, Trena Bates, Tiera Bates, Khaila Moore, Khalin Moore, Khalil Moore, and Keith Gayden Jr.; as well as a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, extended family, church family, and dear friends.

His legacy of faith, love, and service will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him.

“Well done, thou good and faithful servant!”
